Discovered in 1854, its name comes from the Greek “astron” – star- and “phyllon” – leaf- illustrating the shape of its starry groups of acicular crystals. In gemology, it is known as inclusions in quartz crystals and can be confused with rutile.
Its name comes from the Greek “anastasis” which means stretched, elongated, as the form of its bipyramid crystals. It was discovered in France, in Bourg d’Oisans in Isere, by Schreiber in the late eighteenth century, but it is Haüy who attributed its name in 1801.
Named by Thomas Thomson in 1810 after the scottish mineralogist Thomas Allan. This is a mieral close to epidote and there are 3 types of allanite based on their concentration in cerium, lanthanum, yttrium (rare earth element). The lanthanum variety is radioactive.
