It has been known since antiquity, its name comes from the Sanskrit “çulbâri” meaning “enemy of copper” or from the Latin “sulpur”.
Reduced in powder it was used to repel insects and burned to keep away the “vermin” and the “enemies”.
A component of gunpowder discovered by the Chinese, it was widely used by alchemists.
The chemist Lavoisier identified it as a pure element.
