Detailed sheet
sodalite
This is a feldspathoid, his name refers to its high sodium content. Its purplish-blue color is often streaked with white feldspar veinlets.
The Hackmanite is a pink-purple variety discovered in Quebec, Canada. In its formula sulfur has been replaced by chlorine, and has an amazing feature: without light it loses its color, and after returning to a sunlight exposure, it returns, it’s a phenomenon known as tenebrescence.

It is found in syenites, trachytes, pegmatites : Brazil (Bahia), United States (Montana), Canada (Ontario), Greenland, India, Namibia (Fine transparent crystals), Norway, Russia (Urals, in Afghanistan, in Tajikistan.
use in jewelry
Less expensive than lapis lazuli, it is only employed in jewelry in its blue variety, as an ornamental stone or for making cabochons, balls for necklaces and various other objects (ashtrays, cigarette cases, boxes …) the Chinese being specialist on the matter (statuettes).
