Detailed sheet
peridot
Formerly this mineral was called chrysolite, although the “chrysolitus” of Pliny was probably referred to topaz, a “yellow stone”, a “golden stone”. Also called ” stones of knights ” because it would be the crusaders who brought peridot from the east to europe where it has been used to enrich the religious objects before being appreciated later as a gem.
The peridot is one of a series minerals which are silicates of magnesium and iron whose extremes are: Forsterite, a magnesium silicate without iron, sometimes called “white peridot” because often colorless or slightly tinted, and Fayalite, which is the variety with iron (its refractive index can reach 1.77).
The olivine, and its gem variety, the peridot, contain about 80% magnesium and 20% iron. The Peridot is a valued stone when it is of a beautiful lime green, it is also a constituent of certain meteorites (pallasites).
Dunilite is the trade name for a variety of the olivine group containing manganese, discovered in the late 1990s in the region of Kolonne in Sri Lanka. It owes its name to Dunil Palitha Gunasekera, its refractive indices, birefringence and density are higher than most peridot gemstones and it’s more dichroic.

APPROACHING GEMS
Exploited
sites
The deposits are quite extended, but very few give crystals of large size and quality : less than fifty locations are found worldwide.
The volcanic island of Zerbiget or Zabargad, which means peridot in arabic, (former Topazios, east of Egypt, or St. John’s Island) was exploited 3500 years ago, by the Pharaos. After being forgotten, it was “rediscovered” by some pirates, then again forgotten, until it became active again in 1900 and after abandoned again.
Some beautiful stones come from Burma, but also Norway, Russia (Urals, the Kola Peninsula), South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Australia (Queensland), Brazil (Minas Gerais), United States (Arizona), Mexico, Pakistan ( Suppatt mine or Suppet or Sapat), Sri Lanka, China, Afghanistan …
use in jewelry
Only samples of bright and intense color, both fresh and warm, light and bright green are considered gems.
The peridot, which is cut “emerald” but also “brilliant” if mounted in gold, it is often as a “closed setting” because of its tendency to rupture due to pressure. The biggest sample in a cut form, weighing 310 carats, comes from the island of Zerbiget and is preserved at the Smithsonian institute. The museum of the Ecole des Mines in Paris, preserves a fine specimen. A peridot found in a meteorite that fell in Siberia in 1749 was also cut.
The finest collection of peridot is inTurkey, at the Topkapi Palace, the throne of Bayram holds 954. The peridot is the stone of the 16th anniversary year wedding.
Daily care
and precautions
Fragile as sensitive to pressures and impacts. Very sensitive to acids, even vinegar can be damaging. Avoid household products, quick wash in mild soapy water, then rinse with distilled water.
imitations and
treatments
we mimic the peridot with glass, synthetic spinel or corundum. Also with doublets of enamel and synthetic spinel.
Historical
healing properties
This stone would transmit energy and vigor in both body and mind, would harmonize and purify the thoughts, it would also be balancing the emotions level. This gem would be likely to arouse a sudden love, the ” love at first sight “.
Set with a gold ring wore on the left hand, it could avoid melancholy and also madness, and, according to some legends, it would also drain demons and ghosts.
Its natural place is the heart chakra, safeguarding the balance and sending away harmful influences. It would prove to be complementary to the labradorite in the medical professions who suffer demotivation because of their patients. As for the emerald, it is not to associate with other gems as it would see its properties multiplied instead of being reduced, but diverted from their original purpose because it would seek to dominate the other effects.
