This is actually one kind of tektite: these are fragments of terrestrial rocks melted by the impact of a large meteorite, their name coming from the Greek “têktos”, to melt, which were first found on the Vltava River a river of the Czech Republic, since at least 1787. They would come from an impact of 17 million years ago.
Their name changes according to the country where they come from.
Scattered sometimes over thousands of square miles around a meteorite impact, they are known under different names given to places of their deposits: moldavite in Moldova (Rep.), australites in Australia billitonites in Borneo, georgiaites in Georgia in the U.S., indochinites in Vietnam, to javaïtes Java philippinites Philippine Islands …
