Its name comes from the Greek, “two” and “appearance” because of the double surface appearance of the prism when it is crystallized.
Diopside is also “starred”, “shimmering” and the chromite variety, gemstone essentially coming from Russia, is emerald green.
A deposit in Piedmont( Italy ) produces a translucent variety or opaque purplish blue, named Violane.
There is also a shimmering variety, mainly black with a 4-spoke asterism called “ black star “. The Lavrovite is a green diopside vanadium bearing variety which comes from Russia.
