Described in 1916 by Larsen and Wells, it owes its name to the town of Colorado (USA) where it has been identified: Creede quadrangle.
It is a calcium sulfate and hydrated aluminum fluoride.

It occurs in hydrothermal veins rich in fluorides of fluorite and barite deposits. The deposit that produces the most colorful crystals is in Mexico near Durango (Mina Navidad).
It is also found in South Africa, Kazakhstan (Mine Aqshatau, Karangandy region), in Tajikistan in Badakhshan, in China (Guizhou Province, in Bolivia, in Sardinia – Italy, in Greece in Laurium, in France in Alsace near Bergheim and Orschwiller, in the United States (Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, California and New Mexico)
